Sun Clock for Senior Thesis

The Sun Clock is research and design project that examines our chemical and social relationship to light and time, completed during my final semester of college.

It is comprised of research, data visualizations, insights, and design considerations around light effects our quality of life, culminating in a beautiful wall clock that simulates the sun's naturally varying wavelengths and intensities of light, while its face rotates once a day, intuitively informing the user of the time of day by mimicking the sun's position in the sky.

Roles:
Human Factors Research
Market Research
Data Visualization
Concept Creation
Hand Sketching
Mock-ups
3D Modeling
Functional Electronic Prototyping
Aesthetic Prototyping

Colors/Materials/Finishes
Product Development
Art Direction
Photography

This demo represents roughly how this concept would work over the span of a day. The motion of the clock's face and the variation in wavelength and intensity of the light behind the face would rise and set with the sun. By connecting it to WIFI, it could be set to mimic the sun experience anywhere in the world.
